What would a project be without its engineering challenges?
Among other unique factors, the hangar was designed with Nome's extreme winds in mind, which required a high-performance door that maintains performance standards.Additionally, in order to accommodate the maximum number of aircraft and cargo handling space, the hangar needed a 220-foot clear span while still meeting Alaska's 60 pounds per square foot load-bearing requirements for snow and wind.Steel was the material of choice for the construction, as it was the only material that could provide the required span lengths while meeting the load criteria.
The largest hangar, enabling airlines to get aircraft in the air faster and with fewer mechanical delays.Passengers benefit from a more comfortable indoor departure environment, and aircraft are better protected from inclement weather, resulting in a longer service life.
